Bangladesh cricket icon Tamim Iqbal in intensive care after on-field health scare

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal, aged 36, is in critical condition after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match. The incident occurred on Monday while he captained Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club. Shortly after the coin toss, Iqbal experienced severe chest pains and left the field to seek medical attention.

Initially, he was taken to a local hospital where minor heart issues were suspected. However, as his condition worsened, he was transported to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital in Savar. There, doctors confirmed he had suffered a massive heart attack and performed an emergency angioplasty to remove a blockage in his arteries.

Tamim Iqbal is renowned for being Bangladesh’s all-time leading run-scorer in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). During his 16-year career, he amassed over 15,000 international runs. He announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2025.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has canceled a meeting to monitor Iqbal’s condition, and several board members plan to visit him in the hospital. Fans and former players, including Athar Ali Khan, have expressed their support and well-wishes for his recovery.
